How to install a heating cable inside a water pipe?

The heating cable inside the pipe is installed when we do not have the ability to install it outside. This includes places where the pipe goes through a wall, is in a built-up wall or is buried in the ground. This process can be done mainly in pipelines that have straight sections and no 90-degree bends.

In order to insert the heating cable into the pipe, you need a pressure gland that matches the cross-section of the pipe in question. The following two examples are from nVent RAYCHEM and ELEKTRA.

To install a heating cable inside a drinking water pipe, we use only those that are suitable for this purpose and have the appropriate approvals and certificates.

To install the ELT-GLAND-01 choke, you must first install a tee before the heated section.

ELEKTRA in its offer has a set of hydraulic choke that fits 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ pipes. Product name ELEKTRA H-LT.

Composition of the ELEKTRA H-LT set

  1. Throttle nut with grommet (for 23 mm wrench)
  2. Sealing rings on both sides of the rubber gasket
  3. Gasket
  4. Throttle body with external thread R 1/2″ (for 23 mm wrench)
  5. Reduction fitting with 3/4″ and 1″ male threads (for 27 and 36 mm wrenches)

The size of the connector is selected according to the size of the tee. Installation according to the above order and drawing.

Necessary materials and tools required to install the heating cable

  • ELEKTRA SelfTec DW ready2heat self-regulating heating cable
  • H-LT hydraulic gland kit for 1/2 pipes
  • T-piece for the pipe into which the heating cable will be inserted (purchased separately)
  • Pipe sealing tape (to be purchased separately)
  • Hydraulic wrenches

A plumbing tee should be installed on the pipeline to place the heating cable inside the pipe using a gland. A set of glands for 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ pipes is offered. If the diameter of the pipe is larger than 1″, it is necessary to use a reducing tee with a suitable branch (with 1″ female thread), on which the choke will be installed. Match the set of self-regulating heating cable ELEKTRA ready2heat to the length of the pipeline (the same length or slightly shorter).

NOTE: When running the cable through the H-LT gland, wet the cable with water to increase slip on the coating surface.

When running the cable through the H-LT gland, the heating cable must not be contaminated.

  • The cable should be routed through the throttling elements and inserted through a tee into the pipeline.
  • After inserting the cable, the gland should be carefully installed, thus ensuring the tightness of the installation.

Run the cable through the H-LT choke elements, then through the tee and into the pipeline.
